He is the son of Thunder and Lynn Stewart, raised by his grandfather Tobias Whale who teaches him the wisdom of the ancients. He later founds the United States' first black superhero team the Light Side Anti-Crime Unit (LSAC). He is also the grandfather of Jerrica Ocean, the daughter of Thunder and Lynn Stewart. Contents Black Lightning follows a strict superhero code of justice and chooses not to use his powers for petty revenge or ill-will; hence, he is bound by a contract with the people of his city. In spite of his duties as a superhero, Black Lightning's personal life is still a lonely one. He has a somewhat antagonistic relationship with his father who has been estranged from him since he left Lynn Stewart, and is jealous of Thunder's half brother Preston Pierce who resembles Thunder in appearance and powers. In an attempt to keep track of both a cape and real-life identity, Black Lightning often dons a lightning-patterned costume that, according to his ex-girlfriend, he wears out of spite and "hatred of all men." However, when his mother Lynn Stewart threatens to shoot him, he abandons his superhero identity and returns home.[1] In the first episode of The New Batman Adventures, Black Lightning (who, as of this point, is going by a single-word name, "Black") saves Batman from a bomb explosion in his apartment, and teams up with him when he returns to Gotham City in order to keep an eye on the new teenage Batman clone who now carries the name "Jim Gordon". The new Batman, Harvey Bullock, immediately begins making trouble for them. When the commissioner is murdered, Black Lightning teams up with Nightwing, Batgirl and Jim Gordon to investigate the murder. Batman is lured into a trap by Donal Lark, and he tries to save him, but is unsuccessful. Jim Gordon and Black Lightning investigate a hit-and-run where no one is hurt, and Black Lightning finds two suspects and hands them off to Gordon, but Gordon kills them himself.
